After dropping tonight’s contest to the St. Louis Blues 3-1, the Ottawa Senators are now winless in seven straight games. They’ve managed to earn just one point – an overtime loss against the New York Islanders – during the stretch, and their last win on record is a January 19th victory over the San Jose Sharks.

In short: The Ottawa Senators are trending towards unmitigated disaster in the nation’s capital.

A season full of valleys and peaks has produced wild highs and brutal lows, but nothing in the 2011-2012 campaign can compare to what this Ottawa team is going through right now. Perhaps the most unnerving aspect of it all is that the Senators played a pretty solid game against a Blues team that’s struggled mightily on the road this year, and still lost by a pair of goals.

One goal isn’t going to win you many games in the National Hockey League, but the team once again set itself behind the eight-ball after giving up two early goals in the first period. I’ve exhaustively written about Ottawa’s woes in the first frame this year, and quite frankly am running out of words to describe just how porous they are. The team can’t buy a goal early, and almost every single scoring opportunity for the opposition ends up in the back of the net.

Don’t believe me? Ask Chris Porter and David Perron, both of whom beat Craig Anderson cleanly in the opening minutes. Perron’s goal – the second of the night for St. Louis – effectively chased the struggling Ottawa netminder, who stopped just 2 of 4 shots in 3:49 of TOI.

The -2 differential in the first period tonight moved them to a -25 on the season, good for – you guessed it, dead last.

Paul MacLean’s move to the bullpen was a necessity; Anderson looked brutal, and the team needed some kind of momentum swing.

Daniel Alfredsson’s goal – the only one Ottawa would earn on the night – came on the power-play early in the second period, moving the deficit to one. Other than the man advantage tally, Brian Elliott was once again solid between the crease, much to the chagrin of fans in attendance at Scotiabank Place.

The one-goal deficit didn’t last long, though, as David Perron would beat Alex Auld just five minutes later. Past the Perron tally, St. Louis didn’t generate much of any offense later in the game, but with a two-goal lead on the road, my guess is Ken Hitchcock was content with playing a sound defensive game and limiting Ottawa’s opportunities.

The Senators had an abundance of chances to try and cut the deficit in the third period, as St. Louis took a number of penalties. Yet, the Senators power-play simply didn’t have an answer for the St. Louis pressure or Brian Elliott between the pipes, and the two-goal deficit would hold up throughout the game.

For the Blues, it’s a big road victory – no question about it. As good as the Blues have been this year, they’ve struggled on the road (nine total wins this year), and could very well end up in a first-round playoff series where they’re on the road in four of a potential seven games. The big question: Can they build on a game like tonight?

The Senators, on the other hand, continue their downward spiral. At this rate, it’s almost impossible to ignore the ugly peripherals that have plagued this team game-in and game-out. Ottawa’s now scored just nine goals in seven games during this run, and haven’t scored an even-strength goal since the second period against Boston – that’s ten periods and counting, folks.

Oh, and Ottawa again trailed big early in a hockey game. Pretty tough to erase deficits when you a) can’t score, and b) can’t keep pucks out of your own net.

One point out of a possible fourteen. Even the most-negative, cynical, and pessimistic fan couldn’t have drawn that up.

Back to the drawing board for a Thursday night game v. Nashville.
