The NHL Trade Deadline is sneaking up on us like an ugly kid needs to sneak up on a glass of water. Are we excited yet?
I, like most of you, watched TSN’s Countdown to the Deadline show. I would have rather watched Countdown to Liquor Day, but that wasn’t on. Watching the panel’s comments on the Oilers made me wonder just how lame the deals this year will be. Most of what they were saying was speculative, not factual. All the Sam Gagner talk, for example…yes, the Oilers would deal him before players like Hall, Eberle and Nuge, and yes, the Oilers need a Top 4 defenseman; and even yes, I realize you need to give up something to get something…but from what I understand, Gagner is not being shopped and the Oilers would have to be blown away by an offer before they’d move him. So why the panel devoted so much time to talking about Gagner being available escapes me.
Actually, it doesn’t.
The reality is, things are very quiet on the trade front this year. Most teams are Buyers, not Sellers, and the people who are selling aren’t selling anything fantastic. Even a player the level of Jeff Carter comes with warning labels attached (bad contract; injury history; questionable attitude). Gagner has a warning label too, if you want to get technical (small forward; has yet to show he’s more than a 50pts guy).
Since the pros are keeping us entertained with speculation more than reality, allow me to throw my two bits in. Here are 9 “rumors” for you to chew on.
1. Ales Hemsky to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Carl Gunnarsson
The Leafs aren’t going to get what they really want: A big #1 center. Hemsky is one of the only Top 6 forwards available, and the Leafs perhaps have more ability to move a defenseman for him than any other team. From what I’ve been reading, they want a ton for Luke Schenn, so he’s out. It doesn’t sound like they want to deal Keith Aulie or Cody Franson either. Gunnarsson is perhaps the most acceptable loss in TO, and he’d make sense in Edmonton as he not only could play in a Top 4 job, but he’s also Swedish. Klefbom, Paajarvi, Omark, Lander and if the Oilers draft Filip Forsberg…add Gunnarsson and bring back Tommy Salo, and things are set in Edmonton. Someone wave a yellow and blue flag.
2. Ales Hemsky re-signs in Edmonton
Sorry, I’m sticking with Hemsky for a second. Darren Dreger on TSN indicated Oilers management and Hemsky’s people have been talking. If you watch Hemsky play lately, it’s hard not to feel mood-swingy about him. He was great in the game against Ottawa the other day, and it appears he could help Magnus Paajarvi get his game going. If Hemsky was a healthy 60+ point guy on the 2nd line, and if he helped Maggy be a productive 2nd line player, he’d absolutely be worth keeping. Word is, the Hemsky camp wants a longer-term deal (3 or 4 years) are $ 5mil per…which could explain why he hasn’t been re-signed yet. If I’m Steve Tambellini, I am offering Hemsky 1-2 seasons at $ 4.5mil. Nothing more.
3. Patrick Kane to Buffalo for Ryan Miller
The logic behind this one completely escapes me. Corey Crawford, let’s start there. He’s a kid, as far as goalies go. And not unlike most goalies in their second year as starter, he’s experienced some hiccups. Doesn’t mean the guy won’t turn out, though. He looked pretty good against the ‘Nucks in the playoffs last season, if you ask me. Kane is excitement on skates. I think he’s a complete dork off the ice…He’s like that lame jock you knew in high school who thinks he’s cool, but he really isn’t, but because he’s a jock everyone praises him even though he’s got a mullet and is completely lame. Sorry, old scars. Anyway, Kane is a brilliant forward and Miller is a talented but soft player. Unless the Hawks get more than just Miller in this season, I’m staying 100 miles away from it if I’m Chicago.
4. Rick Nash to TO for several assets
Let’s just say, for arguments sake, the package of assets from TO would include Schenn, Nazem Kadri, goaltender Jussi Rynnas and a 1st round pick. Let’s make this a gross overpayment, considering how the Leafs would be on the hook for Nash’s ugly contract. Why would the Blue Jackets deal Nash? The only way he goes is if the Jackets receive a big pile of kids in return. Would this deal make sense for both teams? Yes, actually. That’s the fun part of this. In Nash, the Leafs would get the big, dominant power forward they always wanted. Schenn, who might be 5/6 in TO, would be immediate top pairing in Columbus. Kadri, it is rumored, is not in the Leafs future plans, but in Columbus, he’d have a real chance at being a Top 6 guy. Rynnas would immediately upgrade the goaltending position, and a 1st round pick is a 1st round pick. Let me turn NHL 2012 on and complete this deal right now.
5. Jack Johnson+ for Jeff Carter
Obviously the Jackets aren’t going to move Carter for a defenseman if they move Nash for a defenseman…or at least, not just for a single player. Carter to LA makes sense because of the Mike Richards connection, and because the Kings are not looking as solid in their Top 6 as perhaps they should. Moving Johnson makes sense only because the Kings are knee deep in great D men. Didn’t they just send Slava Voynov down again? Makes no sense, as he belongs in the NHL. Johnson for Carter isn’t a viable deal, as LA would need to throw in something else. If you’re the Jackets, you want youth and potential. So how about Tyler Toffoli, who has 41 goals in 50 games in the OHL this season? Don’t you love how I’m loading up with Jackets with young talent? They might draft 1st overall for the next three seasons because of it, but oh well.
6. Lubomir Visnovsky to Washington for Colorado’s 1st round pick
There once was this guy named Alexander Ovechkin who could score 50+ goals in a season. He’s gone now. Why? Mostly because of Mike Green’s health. The Caps are a better team than their record, but they aren’t going anywhere without finding a way to wake up Ovechkin. Enter Visnovsky, who has one year remaining on his contract before it expires. The Ducks are entering rebuild mode, and the Avs 1st round pick (that the Caps acquired for the train wreck known as Varmalov) would help tremendously in that capacity. Lubo would get Washington into the playoffs, and if that happens, well, anything can happen.
7. Mikael Backlund+ for Derek Roy
Sabres management will wake up any minute now and realize their season is over. When that happens, the sell off will begin. You can’t buy a championship team. Need me to say it louder? YOU CAN’T BUY A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM! The Sabres need to back up, need to move some kids, and need to create a core instead of throwing together a bunch of random expensive pieces. Obviously, it would take more than Backlund to get this deal to happen, but the Flames will give up prospects and draft picks if they have to. Why? Because it’s now or never in Calgary. This roster is perhaps the lowest of the low when it comes to prospect depth. Current players are either old or don’t believe much in the cause anymore. At center in particular, the Flames are hurting. Roy would solve a few problems, and likely push the Flames roster to a playoff spot this season. Enjoy it while it lasts, Flames fans. 10 years of terrible hockey starts after this season ends.
8. Jordan Leopold for Mason Raymond
Since we’re having fun with Buffalo, how about moving out a defenseman, and improving depth at forward? I don’t care what you people think: I like Mason Raymond as a hockey player. The Canucks are on a cup run, and you can never have enough decent defensemen during those moments. I’m sure Leopold would be okay with this deal.
9. Sam Gagner for Luke Schenn for JVR
Hang on, this deal might not make sense. Need to consider it for a second. Heck, you knew I had to throw a Gagner deal in, just because. And you knew I had to throw in a three-team deal, just because. Okay, so here’s how it goes: TO gets Gagner because they want a center who could perhaps become their #1 guy. Edmonton gets James van Riemsdyk because he’s a big power-forward winger and the team has decided to pick up one of the two great Russian prospect centers at the NHL draft (either Grigorenko or Galchenyuk). Moving Gagner opens up a roster spot for the Russian, and adding JVR gives the Oilers the big meaty winger for the 2nd line who can score. Philly gets Schenn, so he can replace Chris Pronger and he can play with his brother. Everyone wins…well, maybe not Edmonton. But everyone else…
